Description

A nice copy of this fascinating collection of accounts. Published more than 30 years ago, this book is now out of print, and such a nice copy is not likely to come up for sale often on ebay.
From the dust jacket: Richard Hakluyt was not only an outstanding collector of travel narratives but a vigorous propagandist for English settlement in eastern North America. He had a hand in preparing the plans for the colonizing expeditions which went to Virginia ( parts of modern North Carolina and Virginia ) and he obtained all the details he could about their progress. He allows his narrators to speak for themselves and is thus able to give both a lively picture of English overseas enterprise in the late sixteenth century and an idea of the problems with which the English colonoists were confronted. Though the colonies failed, the record which Hakluyt published played an important role in reviving English enterprise in the area in the early part of the following century, and it was used as a manual by the settlers of the enduring colony of Virginia established in 1607. But the outstanding value of the narratives Hakluyt preserved lies in the fact that they provided English readers with their first vivid impression of North America. This new, thematic, selection from Hakluyt is edited and introduced by Professor D. B. Quinn of the University of Liverpool and Mrs. A. M. Quinn.
