Sport For Girls+ A Century of Fashion in Sport 1851-1951

LIKE education, which began with schools for the children of parents who could afford to pay, sport is now part of every girls heritage. For a century and a half to play games was the prerogative of the few; they were no more than a means of amusement and an expression of the natural desire to be successful and to win. The pleasure did not come to the full flower of enthusiasm until the twentieth century found in them the joy of being fit.
The idea behind this book is to pick up those threads of joy and enthusiasm and to weave round them an interest that is a much more recent development—the feminine pride and interest in the nations sporting activities and achievements.
You will have seen it last March when the first womens hockey match was played at Wembley Stadium. You will have seen it also in the thousands who went to watch the Australian cricketers last summer. And you may have seen it, too, at Lords, at Highbury, at Twickenham and, most certainly, at Wimbledon.
So Sport for Girls comes to you in the wake of that enthusiasm and takes into account as well some other pursuits of a young womans leisure time. I present it with the good wishes of the distinguished body of contributors who have co-operated in its preparation and the many others whose knowledge and advice have made it possible.
