Superb vintage hardback FIRST EDITION (First impression of the First Edition) entitled “Mary Wakefield,” subtitled “A Memoir,” by Rosa Newmarch, with ELEVEN illustrations, including a frontispiece illustration of Mary Wakefield.
This is the biography of Mary Wakefield, originator of the Competition Festival movement and musician friend of John Ruskin. The contents include: Mary Wakefield’s Quaker Descent, Early Friendships, Visits to Rome, Mary Wakefield as a Lecturer, Friendship with Ruskin… and more …
The 142 pages are nice and neat and a little faded with age, with light foxing near the covers/rims. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages (the lining paper is peeling at the hinge inside the covers exposing the binding cloth under but all is secure). Apart from a previous owner’s inscription/name at the front, there are no other ink or pencil markings in the book. The original red cloth hardback cover is in good condition for its age, with minor wear. The gold on the front board is very good. An intesting list of Music Titles and their Composers, performed at the Westmorland Festival 1885-1912.
