A System of Payments, called Tolls were introduced to maintain and repair all Turnpike Roads, from the 1700s. As this road was between the Royal Mail Roads of A10.11 & 12, it would have been an important Cross-post for Post-boys to connect to the Royal Mail Coaches . This would have been a Fast, Safe route between Cambridge and Colchester run to a strict timetable kept with a timeclock. Today we now pay for our roads through our Road Tax Licences and some of our VAT on petrol. Was £60.00.
