Speed and altitude record attempts by the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter over the past two years have established it as one of the fastest senior fighters in the world. Altitude record attained in December, 1959, 103,395.5 ft, the peak speed reached during the climb being Mach 2.36 (1,600 m.p.h. at that particular height). The F.6 is powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon, Series 200,
turbo jet engine. Span, 33 ft. 8 ins.; length. 45 ft. 10.5 ins. A Hunter F6 recently flew non-stop from Dunsfold. Surrey, to Tobruk, North Africa 1,830 miles in 3 hours 25 minutes, a long-distance record for a fighter.

When Dan Dare first powered his way on to the pages of the Eagle comic in 1950’s, his heroic exploits were an immediate sensation, as schoolboys up and down the land marvelled at tales of his intergalactic space travel.

reign.
