AN EXCEPTIONAL LARGE FORMAT TONED SILVER (?) PHOTOGRAPH OF THE U. S. S. ALLIANCE AT THE PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE NAVAL YARD. NUMEROUS WORKERS AND GREAT DETAIL CAN BE CLEARLY SEEN IN THIS GREAT DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPH. PROBABLY PHOTOGRAPHED EARLY 1880S.
Measuring 7 5/8 by 9 1/8 and mounted to a slightly larger board, this photograph is in near excellent condition.
Mounted on thick card, written on back U. S. S. ALLIANCE (POO-25) built 1874, Norfolk Navy Yd. At Portsmouth, N.H. Navy Yd. early 1880s. Possibly after voyage to the Arctic under Comm. G. W. Wadleigh U N, in search of missing USS Jeannette (Comm. Delong) in 1880 – 81. On this voyage she was beached at 80 degrees N. Photo by Slevin, from Collection of Randall. The real quality is capturing the last few minutes before sailing, two live cows waiting to be lifted on board ship, a sailer climbing the mast to show the flags, and steam is coming from the ships boilers, a moment frozen in time.
