From the FIRST FRENCH EDITION of Munster’s Cosmographia 1552. Five folio leaves (pages 541to 550) from Munster’s Cosmographia dedicated to Rhineland (Germany) and its main villages and towns. Some of the topics covered include 15th century Mainz history, printing press, invention of artillery, Ingelheim, Weisbaden, Bingen, and so on.
Leaves enriched with 7 woodcuts including a nice view of the city of Ingelheim, and one battle scene with several cannons. Size of the leaves: Approximately 30 x 19,5 cm or 11 4/5 x 7 2/3 inches Condition: Leaves a little stained and browned. Overall very good condition. Sebastian Munster (1488-1552), a German scholar, geographer and cartographer was along with Mercator and Ortelius the leading cartographer of his time. Munster’s Cosmographia was an epic 16th century encyclopedic work of the known world, and one of the most popular treatises during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (the work went trough 46 editions in six languages by mid 1600’s). Munster’s work contained not only the latest maps and views of many cities, but also detailed information about the known world.
